(Arrangements: Carson's Independence Chapel) Sex dis discrimination payment is disputed Clay County officials might rescind their $15,000 decision. By KELLY GARBUS Staff Writer It's only been a week since Clay County commissioners approved a $15,000 settlement in a sex discrimination lawsuit. But now, some county officials are balking on writing the check.

Laura Butler-Wilson was working for the North Metro Drug and Gang Task Force as a detective when she was allegedly discriminated against by a superior and then retaliated against for asserting her rights. The subsequent lawsuit, however, lists Clay County commissioners and Sheriff Bob Boydston as defendants, instead of the drug task force. On Friday, Clay County Commissioner Jay Lawson noted that the task force is an entity separate from the county, with its. own board of directors and insurance Buy, sell, trade, morning and Sundays with Star Classified Ads. Ironically though, both the county and the task force had the same insurer at the time of the lawsuit Mid-America Regional Council Insurance Trust. Clay County has since dropped Mid-America because county officials wanted more say in how lawsuits are settled. While with Mid-America, Clay County had a $25,000 deductible. The task force has a $10,000 deductible. Lawson said if the task force paid the settlement, MidAmerica would have had to kick in an additional $5,000.

John Ruh, executive director of Mid-America, could not be reached for comment late last week and a board member for the task force declined to comment on the lawsuit because he was not familiar with it. Lawson said commissioners today will consider rescinding the order to pay the settlement until they can find out more information. Buy, sell, trade, morning and Sundays with Star Classified Ads.
