Vincent Hospice. Mrs. Growden was born in Joplin, MO, to William Archer and Etta I. Marcell Smith, who were both originally from Highland, KS. Her Uncle Lee Marcell was the founding executive of White Eagle Oil and Refining Company, which later became Mobil Oil, and her father developed the first company oil refinery In Joplin.

She was the youngest of five children and grew up in Joplin, MO, and Lawrence, KS. She was a graduate of Kansas University, where she received degree in English and French and was a a Sigma Nu Sweetheart. She and her childhood love, James Harold Growdon were married on October 4, 1937, In St. Louis, MO, where she and her husband resided during his medical training. In 1947, she and Dr.

Growdon moved to Littie Rock, where he assumed a faculty position with the University of Arkansas for Medical Science. He later became a Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery from 1951-1964. Mrs. Growdon was a founding member and past presldent of the Women's Auxiliary at UAMS. Her family and friends knew her as an eternal optimist, devoted wife and mother.

She loved to dance and was a charter member of the Little Rock Ballroom Dance Club. She was an avid reader and was the family historian. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Women's Circle She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou Growden Peterson, and her husband, Thomas A. Peterson, Alley, GA, and their children, Mary Jeanne Peterson Fulmer, and her husband, Mitch Fulmer and Robert McNatt Peterson; a son, Dr. James Harold Growdon and his wife, Laura Rogers Growdon, Brentwood, TN, and his children, Robyn Renee Growdon and James Fletcher Growdon, and his wife, Molly Cau Growdon and a son, Willlam Arthur Growdon, and his wife, Karen Richardson Growdon, Pacific Palisades, CA, and their children, Katherine Melissa Growdon and Matthew Evan Growdon.

She was preceded In death by her husband and a daughter, Judith Anne Growdon. Sam served two tours in Ian Vletnam and was awarded six Bronze two was awarded for herolsm in Stars; combat; a Purple Heart; Vietnam Service Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Silver Star; and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Certificate with Palm. Sam the past Master of Foxhounds of Ft. was Leavenworth Hunt from 1977-1996. He also a member of the Mission Valwas ley Hunt and the Master of Foxhounds Association of America. Sam was a member of the Lions Club in Leavenworth.

She was honored by the Menorah Medical Center Auxiliary, where she served as president; by the Women In Communications for her help to the arts; Epilepsy Foundation 'Excellence in CarIng Kansas City Ballet; The Stop Violence Coalition; Notre Dame de Sion Outstanding Alumna award. She was also president of the Vassar Club of Kansas City and New Reform Temple Women's Committee and the Barney Goodman Foundation. Mrs.
