Cardinals, Braves rained out Tuesday, will play doubleheader Wednesday: First Pitch (2024)

More than 90 minutes after the game's scheduled start time and with storms approaching, the Cardinals announced that Tuesday night's game with the Braves was postponed and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

The first game will start at 12:45 p.m., the second at the originally scheduled 6:15 p.m.

Tickets for Tuesday night's game will be good for the first game on Wednesday.

Additionally, fans who purchased tickets and were in attendance Tuesday will be sent a ticket voucher electronically next week for a future Cardinals weekday home game, the team announced.

With the postponement, the Cardinals will now avoid having to face Braves lefty Chris Sale in the series, as the Braves plan to bring up Bryce Elder from Triple-A to pitch the second game, according to reports.

Reynaldo Lopez, who was to start for Atlanta on Tuesday evening, will start the early game.

Kyle Gibson, who was to start Tuesday evening, will start the early game for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals' starter for the late game wasn't immediately available. Andre Pallante was originally set to start Wednesday but will likely be pushed back.

Both teams are permitted to add a 27th man to the roster for the doubleheader.

Below is the game preview as it appeared earlier in the evening.

The Cardinals, after holding on for a win in Monday's opener, continue a home series Tuesday against the Braves. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m., but the game was delayed due to rain in the area.

Right-hander Kyle Gibson (5-2, 3.44), who was scratched just before the start of his last scheduled start, will take the mound for the Cardinals.

Gibson aggravated a hip muscle during his stretching routine before that game, Wednesday in Miami, and Adam Liberatore filled in.

In his career, Gibson has been a bit worse than normal with extra rest. He has a 4.92 ERA with six or more days off between starts.

Gibson has four straight winning decisions, the longest streak by a Cardinals pitcher this year.

The Braves will counter with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (5-2, 1.57).

In his first year with the Braves, Lopez's ERA is the best by a starter with more than 70 innings pitched and one of two sub-2.00 ERAs using those same qualifiers.

Lopez throws his fastball 57% of the time and his slider 27.6% of the time, and both rank among the best in baseball.

The Braves signed him to a three-year, $30 million deal in the offseason.

The Cardinals, winners of four straight, are 40-37, second in the NL Central and five games out of first. St. Louis is 24-13 since May 12.

In the month of June, St. Louis has 27 home runs, tied for fifth-best in the National League.

The Braves are 43-33, second in the NL East and 7-3 in their last 10.

Nolan Arenado returns to the Cardinals lineup after missing the past two games with forearm discomfort.

Ivan Herrera (lower back tightness):Herrera was placed on the 10-day IL ahead of Saturday's game against the Giants. Herrera said his back locked up while picking up his bag coming off the bus in Birmingham, Alabama. He has felt better this week, and he was set to play catch prior to Tuesday's game. Riley O'Brien (flexor tendon):The right-hander was slated to pitch for Double-A Springfield on June 18, however he had trouble bouncing back from his last outing. O'Brien was sent for an MRI, which came back clean. He resumed a throwing program. There is not set date for when he could pitch in a rehab game.Updated June 24

Steven Matz (lower back stiffness):Matz suffered a setback in his rehab process and will not throw for two weeks. From there, Matz will need another full progression to work his way back to the mound. The lefty started Sunday for Class AA Springfield and threw three perfect innings, with five strikeouts on June 16. However, he experienced lingering soreness the morning following that outing, leading to a lengthy setback. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said the best-case scenario is a four-to-six week recovery time for Matz.Updated June 22
